Glycerine

Lyrics

it must be your skin i’m sinking in
must be for real ’cause now i can feel
and i didn’t mind
it’s not my kind
it’s not my time to wonder why
everything’s gone white
and everything’s grey
now you’re here now you’re away
i don’t want this
remember that
i’ll never forget where you’re at

don’t let the days go by
glycerine
glycerine

i’m never alone
i’m alone all the time
are you at one
or do you lie?
we live in a wheel
where everyone steals
but when we rise it’s like strawberry fields

if i treated you bad
you bruise my face
couldn’t love you more
you got a beautiful taste

don’t let the days go by
could have been easier on you
i couldn’t change though i wanted to
should have been easier by three
our old friend fear and you and me
glycerine
glycerine

don’t let the days go by
glycerine
don’t let the days go by

ah
glycerine
glycerine
oh, glycerine
glycerine

bad moon wine again
bad moon wine again
and she falls around me

i needed you more
when you wanted us less
i could not kiss just regress
it might just be clear
simple and plain
well, that’s just fine
that’s just one of my names

don’t let the days go by
could’ve been easier on you
you, you
glycerine
glycerine
glycerine

About The Song

wtf does that word mean?:

glycerine [n.] it’s short for nitroglycerine, a highly explosive substance

Strawberry Fields [n.] Strawberry Fields, which takes its name from the Lennon-McCartney song “Strawberry Fields Forever,” was dedicated to John after his 1980 shooting death at the hands of a deranged fan. It’s located in Central Park, NYC.

Band Thoughts:

“I was trying to be involved with someone who (a) didn’t want me to be involved with her and (b) couldn’t be involved with me because her life was too busy and too full for me. It’s about the magic of love and loss.”- Gavin Rossdale

“It’s nitroglycerine, as opposed to hand soap. I’m fascinated by an inanimate object that can cause so much destruction. It can sit there like a fat ward, and then it blows up…”- Gavin Rossdale

‘Glycerine’ was one of those ten-minute songs. Sometimes they’d flow just like that, and it felt brilliant to be able to write that way. It’s such a good purging. It’s a song about the impossible – about things that can’t work out; about when you really want things to work, but you know in your heart that they can’t. It’s funny at the time, they weren’t even sure they were going to release ‘Glycerine’ [as a single to radio]. But when the did, things just flipped. I’m sad it didn’t really get on the radio here, but I really enjoy singing it live and performing it solo. It’s the weird sort of perverse test, a nightly test. To see if I can do it.’ – Gavin Rossdale

“Glycerine was a gift of the moment — a gift of a song that sort of forced itself on me. it just flowed and i wrote it pretty much in one go.”- Gavin Rossdale

“kay, with the strings on glycerine, um, the idea behind it was just to catch this quite sad song so the idea was to catch, capture that. Um, and the end piece was sort of inspired cause my father died when we started making the album and so I sorta wrote a little piece I thought just to sort of, as a tribute almost. So we just tagged that onto the end of it.”-Nigel Pulsford

“The wheel in the song’s lyric is a mouse in a cage. You’re inside that wheel, treading water, going to work. But when you rise out of that wheel affecting your life, you get to a new space. It’s about the desire for connection. And yes, the strawberry fields we refer to in the songs are beautiful and are a big make out spot in England.”-Gavin Rossdale

“But the lyric in Glycerine, ‘it might just be clear simple and plain/well that’s just fine/that’s just one of my names’ isn’t ironic. That’s just honest, and irony means being the complete opposite from what you mean.”-Gavin Rossdale

“I play Glycerine on my own because it’s such a personal song; I have sometimes recently been doing it with the band.”-Gavin Rossdale

“Glycerine is a form of explosive, and that’s what the feeling of losing someone really special feels like inside.”-Gavin Rossdale

“”When we rise like strawberry fields”…you know there’s a song “Strawberry Fields” by the Beatles, and it’s a tribute to the Beatles.”-Gavin Rossdale

“It’s a love song.”- Nigel Pulsford
